Julia Gillard at the Third State of the Illawarra Summit

On Tuesday October 18th 2011, Prime Minister Julia Gillard visited Wollongong for the second time in two months to present the keynote speech at the third annual State of Illawarra Summit at Novotel Northbeach Wollongong.

During her visit she also visited the University of Wollongong where she announced at the university’s SMART building that Wollongong and Dapto would be connected to the National Broadband Network (NBN) in the next stage of the network roll-out.

It is expected to take a year to connect over five thousand homes in Wollongong and Dapto to the network.

Photographic Essay

The subject for my photo essay is students studying for their impending exams and completing their final assessments in the final week of the 2011 academic year at the University of Wollongong.

I took a total of 77 photographs over a six-hour period in various locations across the university’s campus which include; the library, the McKinnon building, the UniCentre and a sitting area across Student Central. The previous weekend, I also took photographs of a couple of friends of mine studying in their bedrooms at Campus East—one of many university student accommodations in Wollongong.

I would pitch my photo essay to the Illawarra Mercury’s Weekender magazine and teen magazines such as Dolly and Girlfriend as a feature photo story aimed at senior high school students (in year 11 and 12) and also at the parents of senior high school students, who are contemplating their future after high school/contemplating going to university after they finish school as an insight into what uni life and uni life at the end of a semester and/or an academic year is like.

These photographs were taken on Thursday October 27th 2011.
